santona cantabria

Santoña is a town with deep seafaring roots. Its history and its people have always been closely tied to the sea. The most famous example of this is undoubtedly Juan de la Cosa, a cartographer who played a key role in the discovery of America.

Santoña is also condidered to be the place where Columbus’ ship “Santa Maria” was built.

The port of Santoña has historically long been one of the most important on the Cantabrian coast. Its volume of trade and importance were actually used in 1774 in a court case with Santander, with both towns vying to be regional capital. The modern port is 150 years old and is currently second only to Santander in terms of volume and value of fish unloaded.

Geographically, Santoña is divided into two different areas; a coastal plain where the town is located and a mountainous area where the Brusco and Buciero mountains rise up over the town.
