AZPEITIA – BILBAO IN 8 STAGES.
7th stage: Bermeo

STAGE 7: BERMEO

Distance from the previous Stage: 4 Km (BI-2235)

Bermeo is one of the most important fishing towns in the Basque Country. The town has a long fishing tradition, and for centuries the “Bermeotarras” (as the people from the town are known) were famous for whaling. Even today Bermeo’s economy is solidly based on the fishing industry, which is reflected in the town’s coat of arms, which features a boat hunting a whale.

One of the most picturesque corners of the town is its old port, with several bars where the locals meet up to have a drink and enjoy a few pintxos. During your stay in Bermeo we also recommend that you wander around the steep streets of the old part, and if you are interested, it is possible to visit a museum all about the lives of the Basque fishermen, or “arrantxales”. It is located in Ercilla Tower.

Bermeo is located on the western edge of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, a protected area characterised by the beauty of its natural landscapes. Mundaka is just 3 km to the east, and if you go 8.5 km in the opposite direction you’ll reach  San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a must in terms of tourism in the Basque Country.
