STAGE 1: AZPEITIA
To mention Azpeitia is to speak about the Urola Valley. The heartland of Gipuzkoa and a valley full of contrasts in which Mother Nature plays the main role. Located half way between the three Basque provincial capitals of Bilbao, San Sebastián and Vitoria, Azpeitia is a natural paradise in the inland of Gipuzkoa.
At the foot of the Izarraitz mountain whose peak at el Erlo reaches 1,026 m in the Urola Valley, it is one of the most extensive municipal areas in the province.
In the old part of the town we can find the church of San Sebastián together with several manor houses such as the Casa Antxieta, which the Catholic Kings’ musician Juan de Antxieta had construced in Mudejar style, or the Emparan tower house.
We will also have a chance to meet the people of Azpeitia and the surrounding area, and find out about their culture, history and traditions. The Sanctuary of Loiola, the birthplace of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the patron saint of Gipuzkoa, is located between the towns of Azpeitia and Azcoitia.
