STAGE 4: LEKEITIO
Lekeitio is half way between Bilbao and San Sebastián (an hour away from both of them by car). A town of just 7,000 inhabitants, it has a beach which at low tide leaves a sandy pathway open to the island of San Nicolás.
As in much of the Basque Country, Lekeitio is a town with a long tradition of fishing, and prior to that, several centuries ago, whaling. In the 17th and 18th centuries the whales started to disappear, but fishing and other sea-faring activities continued to be the mainstay of Lekeitio’s maritime activity.
The town has an interesting cultural agenda in the summer (concerts, exhibitions, festivals etc.) As well as its beautiful beaches, Lekeitio also boasts a colourful fishing port lined by bars and restaurants..
