AZPEITIA – BILBAO IN 8 STAGES.
2nd stage: Mutriku
STAGE 2: MUTRIKU
Mutriku is a pretty fishing village, and the predecessors of today’s townsfolk were whalers by trade. The old part of the town, which has been named a Monument Site, is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Gipuzkoa and the Basque Country. It is made up of narrow cobble-stoned alleys which intertwine as they lead down to the fishing port.
Mutriku is part of the Basque Coast Geopark, with amazing rock formations along the coastal flysch and numerous karstic valleys of special geological interest (Astigarribia, Olatz etc). A visit to Mutriku’s geology vistor centre, the Nautilus Museum, is a must.
Mutriku is the cradle of the eminent sailors Gaztañeta and Churruca, both of whom are respectively world famous for their work on ship construction and heroism at the Battle of Trafalgar.
As in the whole of the Basque Country, gastronomy has a key role to play in the town.
