AZPEITIA – BILBAO IN 8 STAGES.
3rd stage: Ondarroa
STAGE 3: ONDARROA
Ondarroa is located at the mouth of the River Artibai, in very rugged terrain. It is the most eastern point of the Bizkaia coast and this stretch of coastline is comprised of steep cliffs such as the remarkable Peña del Fraile (Friar’s Crag).
Outstanding features of this attractive coastal village include Likona Tower, in the old part of the town. Dating from the 15th century, this classic borderland construction is one of the oldest of its kind in Euskadi. Nearby we can find Andra Mari Church, a Gothic construction from 1462, its masonry wrought from limestone and sandstone, and remarkable in terms of the variety of window types, the finishing of its buttresses and the rose window in its facade.
The original Town Hall is another interesting building with a Tuscan facade which makes it stand out from the town’s other buildings.
