We suggest that you start exploring Bilbao from its heart – the Old Part and the Seven Streets, where you’ll be able to visit some of the city’s most emblematic buildings such as the St. John churches and the church of San Antón. The latter features on the city’s coat of arms. You can also visit Santiago Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic building devoted to the city’s patron saint.
Other buildings worth mentioning are: Bidebarrieta Library, John Palace (the stock exchange building), Arriaga Theatre, the Ribera Market and the Plaza Nueva, which is neo-classical in style.
Dominating the centre of town is the Guggenheim Museum, an icon of the city, and the work of the presigious architect Frank O. Gehry.
Behind the museum is the eye-catching sculpture Mama by Louise Borgoise, a gigantic spider nearly 9 metres in height, while in front of the building you can see Puppy by Jeff Koons, an attractive West Highland Terrier puppy made out of flowers which stands some 12 metres tall.
