Nestling between the Treto estuary and Santoña Bay, Laredo is one of Cantabria’s main tourist spots.

The town stretches out in three very different areas: the Old Town and the Arrabal, the Ensanche area and the extension of this as far as El Puntal.

The Old Town and its Arrabal (a neighbourhood built at a later date) was officially declared a historic-artistic site in 1970. This is the original nucleus of the town which dates back to the Middle Ages and still conserves the remains of its old town walls. It is a maze of narrow alleyways known as “rúas”, and it features a number of remarkable buildings constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries, including the Mar Family mansion, the Marchioness of Arcentales Palace, Hoz mansion, Gutierrez Rada mansion etc. At the top of this mansion is the Gothic temple of Asunción, built between the 13th and 18th centuries.
