The town is also known as Flaviobriga as there was once a Roman settlement here. Castro Urdiales formed part of the powerful Four Coastal Towns Brotherhood. It possesses the delicate charm of a fishing town together with an illustrious and aristocratic tourist tradition favoured by its beautiful beaches Ostende and Brazomar.
The architecture of the town is characteristic, with wooden balconies overlooking the gardens of the Amestoy promenade. The origin of the town is medieval and it achieved recognition as a Historical Site in 1978.
Its monumental patrimony comprises Santa Maria Church, the Toki Eder Palace and the Peña del Cuco cave.
