13th stage: GIJON

STAGE 13: GIJON

Distance from the previous stage: 67Km (A-8)

The Romans fell in love with Gijón, with its magnificent sea views, and they placed their thermal baths right here at Campo Valdés on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea. They encountered a native people who were technologically advanced and skilled metalworkers. With the passing of time Gijón became a sizeable town, clearly visible from the Cerro de Santa Catalina, where the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida was inspired to locate his Eulogy to the Horizon, the tourism symbol of the city today.

Cimavilla, or Cimadevilla – the old and charismatic fishermen’s quarter-, the Queen’s Gardens, the leisure port, Poniente Beach, Arbeyal Beach, Corrida Beach, Moros Beach and the Plaza del Instituto make up the city of Gijón, with attractions such as La Campa de Torres, Veranes, La Guía, Somio, La Providencia, Caldones, Deva and La Comocha to name but a few in its privileged rural surroundings.
