STAGE 8: HONDARRIBIA
Once we have climbed to the top of Mount Jaizkibel let us linger a while at the summit to enjoy the spectacular views all around. As we descend the mountain towards Hondarribia, we must make a brief stop at the Guadalupe shrine where a sixteenth century image of the Virgin Mary is venerated.
Arriving in the popular summer resort of Hondarribia we will be struck by the wide range of hotels and restaurants on offer, making the town an attractive spot at any time of the year.
The whole of the walled old quarter of town, declared a national monument, dazzles with its old houses emblazoned with coats of arms and monumental buildings such as Emperor Charles V’s castle, now a Parador Nacional (luxury hotel).
The neighbourhood of La Marina with its colourful fishermen’s houses, restaurants and typical “pintxo” bars with outside terraces is the lively hub of the town. The town also has a beautiful promenade which runs along the beach and which leads us to the new leisure port and the fishing port.
