STAGE 5: ORIO
Located between Zarautz and San Sebastián on the Basque coast, Orio is a small fishing town set in stunning natural surroundings. On the one hand, this is where the River Oria merges with the sea and the beach, while looking inland the protaganists are the green mountains of the coast.
The estuary, the sea and the mountains offer a rich panorama and the opportunity of beautiful long walks and a whole variety of activities: hiking, cycling, all kinds of fishing, rowing, canoeing, surfing, windsurfing, swimming, paragliding and so on.
The church of San Nicolás de Bari (13th century) is an outstanding architectural feature of the town. The town has a long beach at the mouth of the River Oria, which is where the town’s campsite is located.
Wandering around the streets of the town and the smoking grills of highly prized fish such as sea bream awakens hidden gastronomic instincts in the visitor.
