This attractive town in the east of Asturias is very famous for two reasons: firstly it is the site of the pre-historic Tito Bustillo Cave, declared UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the importance of its cave-paintings and carvings. Secondly, Ribadesella is the finishing line of one of the world’s most famous canoe races, the International Descent of the River Sella, held each year on the first Saturday of August, and declared an event of International Tourist Interest.
The River Sella defines the life of this emblematic port town, where fishing, be it from the river or the sea, has long been the traditional mainstay of the economy. Whale hunting, deep sea fishing, inshore fishing and salmon fishing, its fish-salting industry and its maritime trade impregnate the old quarter of the town.
The town’s close connection with the Cantabrian Sea is also reflected in six ceramic panels in El Paseo de La Grúa, work of the famous cartoonist Antonio Mingote.
