Zumaia is located at the mouth of the River Urula and there is a distinctly medieval air about the town.
The artwork is Zumaia is also unique, maybe due its combination of bay, marina and beaches; Izturun Beach has become world famous for the filming of the Game of Thrones series while Santiago Beach is located at the very mouth of the River Urola. Or maybe it is because of the town’s close connection with the famous Basque painter Ignazio Zuluaga.
The cultural centre named after the artist is one of the town’s most popular tourist attractions. The town, which is open to the Cantabrian Sea, has a number of outstanding features such as the church of San Pedro, the breathtaking Foronda and Olazabal palaces and the beautiful chapel of San Telmo.
No visit to Zumaia is complete without a stroll along its wonderful Deba – Zumaia Flysch, a spectacular cliff route featuring layers of geological strata which date back over 50 million years.
